Type is usually measured in picas and points. Horizontal spacing is measured in ems. One em is s distance equal to the type size. In 8 pt type size, an em equal 8 points. In 24 pt type size, it is 24 points. 1/2 an em is called an en.
A font of text type usually includes the hyphen and two sizes of the long dash: the en dash and the em dash.
The en dash stays for the word to, and uses to show ranges of numbers such as times, page numbers, or scores.
An em dash is used to mark a dialogue and indicate a pause in a sentence.
