In the1750s, John Baskerville created his beautiful typeface with a more vivid contrast between thick and thin elements. This typeface was unusual for contemporaries. In conversation with Benjamin Franklin, one of them accused him of “ blinding all the Readers in the Nation, for the Strokes of your Letters being too thin and narrow, hurt the Eye, and he could never read a Line of them without Pain.”
